Green Gables Wedding Estate

A Wedding at Green Gables

It felt like ages from the day I shot my last wedding, and rightly so. Like every other industry Weddings were no exception to closures due to the pandemic. This is a people business and weddings are an intimate affair that isn’t justly done when distancing and masks come in; they remove all of that good stuff we’re so used to, touching, greeting, embracing new family. But health is paramount, so weddings, by that very argument had, to be put away for a season or two.

The Bride and I

Mystika hired me early in 2020 before we entered this new phase of life, she was excited and told me about her choice to use Green Gables Wedding Estates for her special day; the future was looking like a dream. Fast forward to March when all plans had to be canceled but life and love had to just keep moving forward, so rescheduling was the new plan, and that worked out, too.

I went +18 months without the opportunity to film a wedding or any gathering of people in the style I love to film in. On the morning of Mystika’s wedding, I kept checking my bag, looking for SD cards, making sure I had everything I needed. I worried that maybe I’d forgotten my own rules and desires for exposure, I feared that I would blunder and ruin the film before even editing it. Five minutes into the bridal prep and I’m fine.

Green gables estate, the wedding

The Green Gables Wedding Estate itself is beautiful, artistic, very Earthy, like a garden in a forest. Once inside the venue, it’s easy to overlook that you’re still in California with the strong contrast in the greenery, running fountains, ivy-covered building sides, and trees that are connected by an endless string of vines, and the historic house that sits at the center of the property. The grounds themselves are spacious, but not large, and just a few hundred feet away is the highway, but you wouldn’t know it if you weren’t reminded by the drive into the property. Green Gables is a very private and low-key venue. This was my first wedding here.

It can be easy to view clients as non-personal to you because of the business aspect in weddings; all that faded away in the months of texts here and there to make sure we were still on for the journey down the Isle. Watching the family and hearing them speak to one another made it all real, it made it fresh to see this extraordinary day being made especially important for Mystika’s grandparents. That was probably my favorite thing, watching Mark be so concerned for her Grandpa’s (simply known as ‘Papi’) tux, making sure every part was there, and speaking to him with affection and genuine care. I later learned that this was one of her favorite things about Mark, his love for her Papi (it was mentioned more than once while I was filming). And for her Grandmother, well, she had one of the biggest honors and that was marrying these two before their friends, family, and newborn son, Luke.

What an honor it was to film at the Green Gables Wedding Estate, to film these Two who are now One.

Ricky was the best surprise videographer hand-picked by our incredible photographer. We never met him nor did we tell him what we wanted or needed in our video. Truly, we didn’t know how good of hands we were in until we saw the 30 second teaser and I was in a puddle of tears of utter happiness.
To be able to tell a story that evokes such strong emotion in a wedding video is a gift. Most wedding videos are sweet and beautiful but Ricky’s video captured personal moments with sentimentality that is rare to find.
The video was never cheesy, never flashy, never wannabe “Vogue”, swoopy, nor trying to be too artsy or trendy. Also, I’m so glad my voice was not on that video and I’m so relieved Ricky took that risk to go a little off the usual script and was able to tell a compelling story.

Thank you Ricky for your editing and story-telling magic and professionalism.
Anyone interested in hiring this man, do not hesitate. Book him now! You won’t be disappointed.
